Every curious adventurer eventually finds themselves with a question about Ravenwick. Here are a few answers to the things we are asked most often.

What is Ravenwick? +

Ravenwick is an island unlike any other. A place where the ordinary and the extraordinary seem to exist side by side.

According to the oldest records, the island was discovered and settled by Captain Raven P. Hardwick, whose descendants have called Ravenwick home ever since. Generations later, his great-great-great-granddaughter, Rayne Hardwick, is beginning to uncover some of the secrets her family has carried for generations.

Hidden somewhere beyond the familiar world, Ravenwick is home to old legends, curious creatures, forgotten secrets, and perhaps a little more magic than most people are prepared to believe.

The island has a long and rather peculiar history, much of which remains unexplained. Some stories have been passed down for generations, while others are still waiting to be discovered.

Whether you believe Ravenwick is simply a place of stories and imagination, or whether you suspect there may be something more to it... well, that is for you to decide.

After all, the best adventures begin with a little curiosity.

Where did the idea for Ravenwick come from? +

Ravenwick began with a simple idea: what if there really were places where magic had never quite disappeared?

I wanted to create a world where imagination wasn't something we outgrew, but something we could rediscover—a place filled with strange little mysteries, forgotten stories, curious creatures, and adventures waiting just beyond the ordinary.

From there, Ravenwick slowly began to take shape. The island, its history, its characters, and its secrets all grew together until it became a world of its own.

And perhaps that is the most curious thing about Ravenwick...

I didn't really create it. I simply discovered it.

The stories were already there. I just had to start writing them down.

What are The Ravenwick Chronicles? +

The Ravenwick Chronicles are the stories of Rayne Hardwick and the adventures that begin with a treasure, a little imagination, and a very curious raven.

Rayne is a twelve-year-old storyteller who lives on the island of Ravenwick with her family. Her best friend, Pip Iggins, spends his days exploring the island in search of curious treasures. Each evening, Pip returns with one of his latest discoveries, eager to show Rayne what he has found.

And Rayne has a wonderful habit of turning ordinary things into extraordinary stories.

A curious trinket might once have belonged to a forgotten explorer. A strange object could be the remnant of a long-lost adventure. A seemingly ordinary treasure might have a much more mysterious history than anyone could imagine.

Together, Pip's discoveries and Rayne's imagination become the beginning of The Ravenwick Chronicles—a collection of stories inspired by the treasures Pip finds throughout the island.

But perhaps there is more to these treasures than Rayne realizes...

Because on Ravenwick, even the smallest discovery may have a story waiting to be told.

Who is Rayne Hardwick? +

Rayne Hardwick is a curious twelve-year-old girl with a remarkable family history, and an even more remarkable imagination.

Rayne is the great-great-great-granddaughter of Captain Raven P. Hardwick, the explorer who first discovered and settled the island of Ravenwick. Growing up surrounded by stories of her ancestor and the strange history of her home, Rayne has always been fascinated by the things other people might overlook.

Rayne has many friends, but she has always preferred the company of her very best friend, Pip Iggins, a rather unusual raven with a talent for finding curious treasures scattered throughout the island.

And Rayne has a talent of her own.

She is a storyteller.

Whenever Pip returns from one of his adventures with an interesting discovery, Rayne can't resist imagining the story behind it. A strange object can become a lost treasure. An old trinket can belong to a forgotten explorer. A curious little find can lead to an adventure far more extraordinary than either of them expected.

At first, Rayne's stories are simply stories she invents for Pip.

But as she begins to uncover the hidden world beyond Ravenwick, she discovers that perhaps some of the stories she tells aren't quite as imaginary as she thought.

She may have inherited the Hardwick name... but her imagination may be the key to discovering what lies beyond it.

Who is Pip? +

Pip Iggins is a raven of impeccable manners, questionable habits, and exceptionally good taste in snacks.

Pip is Rayne Hardwick's very best friend and, according to Pip himself, a highly distinguished gentleman of Ravenwick. He is a collector of curious treasures, which he discovers throughout the island and brings home to share with Rayne.

Pip has a particular fondness for scones and peanuts, and is not above making his opinions known when either are in short supply. He is also rather partial to shiny things, mysterious objects, and anything he considers worthy of being added to his collection.

But Pip has a responsibility far greater than collecting treasures.

He is the guardian of the Ravenstone.

The Ravenstone is an ancient and important part of Ravenwick's history, and Pip takes his role as its guardian very seriously—even if he doesn't always take himself quite so seriously.

Though Pip may appear to be an ordinary raven to the untrained eye, there is considerably more to him than meets the feather. He has an uncanny knack for finding things that others overlook, and his discoveries have a habit of leading Rayne into adventures neither of them could have anticipated.

Pip is also the narrator of Letters from Ravenwick where him and Rayne navigate the mysteries of the Crystal Realm and the magical world hidden beyond Ravenwick. As Rayne begins to discover that the stories she once imagined might contain more truth than she realized, Pip's knowledge and instincts become invaluable companions on their journey.

Distinguished, inquisitive, slightly mischievous, and never far from a scone, Pip Iggins is the sort of raven one is fortunate to call a friend.

What is the Crystal Realm? +

The Crystal Realm is a mysterious world hidden beyond the familiar shores of Ravenwick—a place where magic flows through the land, the creatures, and the ancient crystals that give the realm its power, and bring magic to the people of Ravenwick.

Few humans know that the Crystal Realm exists. Its landscapes are unlike anything found in the human world, from the Onyx Mountains and the Quartz Caves to the Aventurine Forest, Amethyst Boglands, and the mysterious Selenite Reef.

At the heart of these places are five ancient Origin Crystals: Onyx, Quartz, Aventurine, Amethyst, and Selenite. Each possesses its own unique vibration and influence, touching a different part of the human imagination.

The Crystal Realm is not simply a place to be visited. It is connected to the human world in ways that are not yet fully understood, and its magic has a curious way of finding its way across the boundary between the two realms.

But the Crystal Realm has secrets of its own.

And when something begins to disturb the ancient crystals, Rayne finds herself drawn into a journey far beyond anything she could have imagined.

Perhaps the most curious question isn't how to find the Crystal Realm... it's how it's magic affects us all.

What are Letters from Ravenwick? +

Letters from Ravenwick are more than letters. They are invitations to step beyond the ordinary and into the world of Ravenwick.

Each month, a letter arrives from the island, bringing a new piece of the story along with it. Written by Rayne and narrated by her distinguished companion, Pip Iggins, the letters invite young adventurers to follow their discoveries, explore the mysteries of Ravenwick, and uncover secrets hidden along the way.

But there is more to each letter than the story itself. Inside, curious adventurers may find recipes, activities, clues, illustrations, and other little pieces of Ravenwick to keep and explore.

The letters are designed to become part of an ongoing adventure—one that unfolds slowly, month by month, as Rayne and Pip continue to discover that the island holds far more secrets than they ever imagined.

So when a letter from Ravenwick arrives in your mailbox, don't simply open it...

Read carefully. You never know what might be hiding between the lines.

Coming Spring 2027

Who are the letters for? +

Letters from Ravenwick are written for curious young adventurers who still believe there may be a little more to the world than meets the eye.

They are especially suited to children who love stories, imagination, mysteries, magic, and discovering new worlds. The kind of children who ask questions, collect treasures, invent stories, and aren't quite ready to stop believing in the impossible.

The letters are designed to be enjoyed independently, but they can also become something to share with a parent, grandparent, sibling, or another favourite grown-up. Reading a letter together, solving a clue, trying a recipe, or discovering a new piece of Ravenwick can turn each arrival into a little adventure of its own.

There is no particular kind of adventurer required.

You simply need a curious mind, a little imagination, and a willingness to believe that perhaps, somewhere beyond the ordinary world, Ravenwick is waiting.

What is the Crooked Lantern Caravan? +

The Crooked Lantern Caravan is the travelling shop of Madame Corva. A curious merchant with an even more curious collection of wares.

Madame Corva is known to wander the roads with her Caravan, gathering and creating all manner of oddities, artwork, handmade treasures, curious curiosities, and things that are perhaps a little difficult to explain. Some are inspired by Ravenwick, while others seem to have found their way into her collection from places far beyond the island.

Madame Corva spends a great deal of time in Ravenwick, where she is known to appear without much warning and disappear just as mysteriously. But the Caravan does not stay in one place for long. From time to time, she ventures beyond the island and can be found frequenting markets, fairs, festivals, and curious gatherings throughout Newfoundland and beyond.

You never quite know what Madame Corva will have brought along with her. A handmade creature? A peculiar relic? A piece of artwork? Something rescued from the sea? Perhaps even an oddity that seems to have a story of its own?

If you happen upon the Crooked Lantern Caravan, take a moment to look around. You never know what might be waiting among the shelves.

And if you can't catch the Caravan on the road, fear not, the online Caravan is slowly taking shape, and will eventually bring Madame Corva's curious wares to adventurers beyond Ravenwick.

Where does the Caravan wander?

The Crooked Lantern Caravan is rarely content to stay in one place for very long. Throughout the warmer months, Madame Corva can be found wandering the roads and setting up her curious little shop at markets, festivals, craft fairs, and other gatherings throughout Newfoundland.

If you're hoping to encounter the Caravan in person, visit the Where the Caravan Wanders page to discover where Madame Corva is headed next.

Keep watch for the lantern. It may be closer than you think.

Who created Ravenwick? +

Ravenwick was created by author and artist Layla Reeves, a lifelong believer in stories, imagination, and the possibility that there might be a little more magic in the world than we usually notice.

Layla grew up on Vancouver Island, surrounded by the sea, forests, and the particular feeling of living somewhere separated from the mainland. A few years ago, she found her way to Newfoundland, which she now proudly calls home. Somehow, she has always found herself drawn to islands.

Perhaps that is why Ravenwick feels so familiar.

Before Ravenwick came to life, Layla spent many years working and studying in the health fields, eventually earning her degree and building a career in a very different world. But the stories, art, and ideas that had always lived in her imagination eventually began asking to be given a life of their own.

Eventually, Layla retired from her career to pursue the things that had always called to her most strongly: writing, art, creating, and a little bit of magic.

Ravenwick began as a dream of an island, a place where imagination could wander freely, where strange things might be found among the ordinary, and where stories could become something more.

What began as an idea for an island and a handful of characters gradually grew into something much larger: a world filled with stories, creatures, mysteries, artwork, and adventures waiting to be discovered.

Layla writes the stories of Ravenwick, creates its characters and artwork, and continues to uncover the island's history alongside the readers who journey there.

But if you ask Layla whether she truly created Ravenwick, she might give you a rather curious answer...

Perhaps Ravenwick was already there. Perhaps she simply happened to dream of it.

After all, when you've spent your life living on islands, perhaps it isn't so strange to dream of finding one more.

How are the characters created? +

Ravenwick is a world built from imagination—and these days, a little technology helps bring that imagination to life.

All of the creatures, characters, and scenes you see throughout Ravenwick begin as ideas, sketches, descriptions, and a great deal of experimentation. I use generative AI as one of the tools in my creative process to help bring those ideas into visual form.

But the finished images don't simply come straight from a prompt.

I create the creatures (by hand), decide what they should look like, guide their development, select the elements that belong in Ravenwick, and then edit and refine the images myself. I also work extensively on composition, colour, details, expressions, backgrounds, and consistency so that the finished artwork belongs within the world I've created.

In other words, AI is a tool in my artist's toolbox and not the storyteller.

The stories, characters, creatures, world-building, and creative direction all begin with me. I use technology to help turn the things I imagine into something you can see.

I know that not everyone is comfortable with AI-generated imagery, and I respect that. I believe it's important to be open about how Ravenwick is made rather than pretending the technology isn't part of the process.

After all, Ravenwick has always been about imagination, and I'm simply using the tools available to me to bring that imagination into the world.

Ravenwick's inhabitants are very real indeed...

The creatures and characters that appear throughout Ravenwick have been handcrafted by me as physical pieces, including Rayne and Pip. I use a combination of needle felting, clay sculpting, painting and sewing. These little inhabitants regularly travel with the Crooked Lantern Caravan, where they can be seen in person at markets and events.

Want to meet some of them?

Visit the home page to see photographs of a few of Ravenwick's handcrafted inhabitants, and keep an eye out for them when you encounter the Caravan on the road.

Is magic real? +

That depends entirely upon whom you ask. Some people insist that magic is nothing more than imagination. Others know better. Around here, we prefer not to make assumptions.
